Over 46 years of Treating and Maintaining Lawns
Fertilisation
Fertilisation
All living things need nutrition, or food. With grass plants nutrients are absorbed by the roots from the soil. Fertilisation provides, or supplements, the natural nutrients so the plant will be as healthy and attractive as Possible.
The main nutrients are Nitrogen (N), Phosphorous (P) and Potassium (K) together with certain elements that grass plants require to be healthy and strong.
The Lawn Specialist know that the grass plant benefits most if it is fertilised in useable amounts several times a year. In the same way that you would not feed a pet a huge amount of food once a month, it is not in the best interest of the grass plant to give it a huge amount of fertiliser once or twice a year. After several decades of service and the evidence of millions of lawns.
The Lawn Specialist has developed its programme based on six treatments throughout the portion of the year when the plant is not dormant.
Lawn Applications
Application 1 (Early Spring)
At this time of year the lawn is beginning a growth cycle following the winter dormancy. Most broadleaf weeds are not yet growing and insects are inactive. This first application of fertiliser is designed to help the grass begin its growing cycle and to strengthen the grass plants to better cope with the coming summer conditions. The combination of nutrients supplied, Nitrogen (N), Phosphorous (P) and Potassium (K) will provide new greening of the grass and will help sustain it until the next application.
On those lawns where it is appropriate this application will include material to assist in controlling moss.
Throughout the year it is important that the homeowner practice good practices in the care of their lawn. Many of these practices are described in the “Maintenance” section. Your The Lawn Specialist Lawn Care technician will also make suggestions with each application outlining actions that will be beneficial to your lawn. These should be followed as much as possible.
Application 2 (Late Spring)
This application provides the proper mix of NPK to the grass plant in order to promote strong leaf growth and overall plant health. Broadleaf weed control may also be applied at this time to help control weeds that have germinated. Some weeds are persistent and require weed control over several application cycles. This is also an excellent time to aerate your lawn. All lawns, no matter what condition, will benefit from aeration. Your The Lawn Specialist Technicians can advise you of this optional treatment and the timing that is applicable to your lawn.
Application 3 (Early Summer)
This application provides the proper mix of NPK to the grass plant in order to promote strong leaf growth and overall plant health. Broadleaf weedcontrol will continue, as needed to help control weeds. Some weeds are persistent and require weed control over several application cycles. Appropriate cultural maintenance guidelines need to be employed by you, especially with respect to mowing and watering, to compliment the programme.

This is also the time that turf insects and pests may begin to be active in lawns. If pests are present, your The Lawn Specialist Lawn Care technician can advice you of the optional treatments that are available to add to your programme. When the The Lawn Specialist technician is treating your lawn he will be looking for signs of problems caused by insects or other pests.
However, you are on the lawn much more often. Please let us know if you believe there is a problem and we will visit to do an inspection and to give you the best, timely advice and recommendations.
Application 4 (Late Summer)
This is the time of year when your grass plants are reproducing and strengthening. You may even see an increase in turf density and vigour in your lawn. Your The Lawn Specialist Lawn Care technician will apply a balanced fertiliser to perk up the grass after the stresses of summer and help keep the momentum of growth vitality.
Keep up the cultural maintenance as required.
Application 5 (Early Autumn)
As the amount of daylight decreases in the Autumn, Temperatures begin to cool and leaf growth in grass plants begins to slow down. The Lawn Specialist will apply the correct mix of NPK to provide proper nourishment to the grass plant at this time. The weather is often just right for weeds and there may be a second spurt of weed growth. We will apply weed control products as needed to help control this problem.
Please review the section in this website entitled “Weeds” & Keep up the cultural maintenance as required.
Application 6 (Early Autum
This is a very important fertiliser application your lawn receives. In Autumn, as the ambient air temperature cools the grass plant stops putting food into leaf growth. However, photosynthesis continues and the food generated by the grass plant goes exclusively to root development and growth. This is a crucial time for root growth.
The Lawn Specialist will provide the nutrition that is most beneficial to the plant. This application also prepares the grass plant for next spring and will provide a kick-start for the growth of the plant next spring. Autumn is also an excellent time to aerate your lawn. All lawns, no matter what condition will benefit from aeration. Your The Lawn Specialist Technicians can advise you of this optional treatment and the timing that is applicable to your lawn.
Let the experts do the work! The Lawn Specialist will feed your lawn six times and provide our Lawn Care programme of services throughout the year for less than you would pay to do the job yourself.
